N*Converter
is enabling the premier Korean publications
retail company with real-time image file conversion
through its middleware solution. Previously,
publishers and retailers were forced to maintain
separate databases of PDF and image files
for online browsing and searching, as word-searches
could only be performed on a text or PDF format,
while online viewing was conducted through
image file formats such as JPEG. Moreover,
a separate file had to be maintained for each
image size, for the reader to be able to resize
the scanned images for browsing. Therefore,
a publisher would retain a copy of its publication
in PDF format, while the retail company would
maintain a vast database of image files for
online retail. N*Converter was able to create
a new generation E-Book service environment,
by enabling real-time conversion of PDF files
to image format, eliminating the need for
the retailer to maintain redundant databases
for multiple image files, drawing directly
upon the publishers’ databases. N*Converter
decreased annual cost from USD4,380,000 to
USD368,000, generating an eleven-fold decrease
in spending, while simplifying the addition
of systems and publications on offering.
